From the moment Mike and I laid eyes on Bamboo Bazaar we've been calling it Wicker World. I've never seen so much wicker, rattan, reed and bamboo. Wicker World, I mean Bamboo Bazaar, occupies a big double storefront at 1840 Davenport Road (near Symmington) in Toronto's west end. The business, which was founded more than a century ago by W.H. Kilby, has occupied this location for more than 60 years.

Our poppies have just come into bloom and because we let them seed themselves each year, there's always a riot of flowers at this time of year to cut and bring indoors. Poppies can be fussy; expert advice says to sear the stems with a match immediately after cutting, then plunge them into water containing flower preservative. Another tip advises briefly plunging the cut stems into boiling water.

Mike dove into this makeover without giving me a head's up, which is a shame because the before shot would have been awesome — this wrought iron garden table has been quietly rusting in a neglected corner of our garden for the past couple of years. By the time I knew what he was up to, Mike was well on his way to rehabilitating it . . .

Waddington's Brighton is holding a fantastic auction this weekend with the two-day sale of the estate of Mavin Maurer of Toronto. Sunday's selection is interesting enough but it's the Saturday (May 23) sale of fine garden urns and statuary that really fires my imagination. The online gallery looks so promising that I predict a significant number of designers will be in the house bidding on behalf of clients with homes grand enough to stand up to this kind of ornament. Or maybe the designers and dealers will stay in bed and leave the riches to the rest of us.

With so many cooks in the kitchen you’d expect a disjointed feel to the Showhouse but the overall design direction is surprisingly cohesive. A consistent colour story helps enormously: purples, mauves, lavenders and lilacs are frequently played off against grey and silver neutrals. Stylistically the house is transitional with more emphasis on the traditional than the modern. Finishes, furnishings and millwork are all luxe, luxe, luxe.
