Aberfoyle 2: The Best of the Rest

This is the smiling face of my friend Ingrid with her one and only purchase from our trip to the Aberfoyle Antiques Market last Sunday. Ingrid has a cream and gilt dressing table that was in desperate need of a mirror and this piece is practically a perfect match. The seller wanted $45 for it but Ingrid drives a hard bargain -- they settled for $35. So what else did we see at Aberfoyle? It wasn't a great week for furniture but we scoped some pretty terrific odds and ends . . .

The Christie Antiques Show is back this Saturday (September 10) with more than 300 dealers hawking Canada's biggest selection of vintage and antique furnishings and accessories. Located at the Christie Conservation Area in Dundas, Ontario, the show spreads out over 10 acres. See my tips for making the most of your day here. I can't predict the weather five days from now but I can guarantee great bargains and a fun, exciting atmosphere.

Wilkens Auction Looking Lively

Toronto's A.H. Wilkens Auctions & Appraisals was absolutely jumping yesterday and I was so buoyed to see it. Good quality merchandise was fetching decent prices but there were plenty of bargains walking out the door, too, like the Moroccan-style pendant light, below, which sold for a wickedly good price of $50. Wilkens tacks on a 17 per cent buyer's premium. Most of the auctioneer's bi-weekly sales happen Tuesday afternoons; the timing is unfortunate for us poor slobs who work for a living, which is why the room is full of mostly dealers. But I recommend you subscribe to the Wilkens eblast and keep your eye on their site; absentee bids are encouraged and if you can get away from your desk, it's a fun afternoon, very reminiscent of the old Ritchies Discovery Sales.

When it comes to reinventing vintage casegoods, nobody does it better than Toronto's Burnett. What shop owners Cathy and Gordon Runge do with a bit of black, white or gray paint impresses the hell out of me; they don't merely revive shabby tables and cabinets, they reinvent them. I grilled Cathy for tips on how to tackle such a project and here's what she had to say . . .

Milton Antiques Expo

The folks who run the Christie Antiques Show are getting ready for their summer fair next weekend (July 23) outside Milton, Ontario. Staged at Country Heritage Park, just off the 401 at 8560 Tremaine Road, Gadsden’s Midsummer Antique Expo has lined up 120 dealers from Ontario, Quebec and PEI bringing a selection of antiques, collectibles, retro design and art; $10 admission, kids get in free.
