If you’ve got a few minutes to kill I highly recommend a scroll through the online catalogue for the Wright Mass Modern auction taking place today. There is no better way to train your eye and refine your taste.
Gorgeous, gorgeous stuff.
I love many of the items up for grabs but these few pieces would really make me happy: from top, a Milo Baughman chromed steel sofa with Jack Lenor Larsen upholstery (estimate $1,000 – $1,500); centre, American folding chairs (estimate $500 – $700); a pair of Harvey Probber rosewood nightstands (estimate $1,500 – $2,000). Wright is notorious for posting low estimates and my guess is that everything will sell for more than expected.
Which piece would you love to take home? Copy and paste a link into the comment field . . .

If I could have those nightstands, I’d happily get rid of my bed to make room for them.

I was watching the results intermittently and was surprised to see that many of the minimums weren’t met. Good for us schmoes, bad for the sellers. Awwww!
I swear to God there were two sofas recently listed on Craigslist looking suspiciously Baughman.

jpg, I like your style.
shescomeundone, you’re right about the prices, I’m shocked, frankly. The US economy must REALLY be in the dumps. A vintage Eames Compact sofa for $750? Unheard of. I was never a huge fan of that sofa until I sat on one and was astonished by how comfortable it is; truly great design.
Lin, our nightstands sold high at $2,375; I guess a few folks liked them as much as we did.

If MCM is a style you like, it appears there are deals to be had! I don’t know if it’s just the economy in the dumps, because I think “luxury goods” are selling well but that those with money don’t want this stuff (any more, if they ever did)?
I don’t know, a few things possibly caught my eye but it wasn’t my thing. I don’t know if the big names are enough to push this stuff anymore (over saturation, unfortunately, because I think in moderation in the right space a “modern” piece can be great – functional and practical). Too much Apartment Therapy etc etc?
Chris – do you know if these auction houses arrange shipping easily to Canada and if so, is it prohibitive or do-able?

sc, most auction houses happily provide a list of trusted shipping agents but you’re on your own as far as making the arrangements. I did a post here on shipping charges and broker fees with some good advice in the comments sections; have a look.
