It Started So Innocently . . .

Strolls

All hail serendipity! A few months back I was mooching through furnishing shops in Toronto’s Riverside and Leslieville neighbourhoods when I spotted the pretty terrific brass and marble impala bust, left, at Elbers Antiques (777 Queen Street East, 416.466.3938). I admired the piece, noted the $85 price, then moved on. Several shops later, I stopped in at Fred (1091 Queen Street East) where, rather remarkably, I found the awesome brass impala bookends below for $45. I walked away from both items but they stayed with me and a few days later I went back to play let’s make a deal; I picked up the bust for $65 and the bookends for $35; I’ve been enjoying them ever since. Renowned American designer Vicente Wolf has been quoted as saying, “One is a tchotchke, two is chance, and three is a collection with persona.” I guess I’m on my way to collecting impalas.

A quick note about Fred; owner Greg Perras, the original founder of Ethel, has decided to get back into street-front retail and has taken over the space formerly occupied by Winkle (1107 Queen Street East). He’ll be opening in early May as Highway 11 . . . stay tuned.

    Dear Style North,
If you’re ever closer to Queen and Coxwell and in need of a really terrific cup of coffee to go with your design fix, be sure to stop by Voulez Vous Cafe, 1560 Queen Street East.
Excellent coffee, nice music, and some good furniture available for purchase. They’re still putting up art and such on the walls, but the space is lovely already and will only get better soon. We’re going to star selling stemware and garden accents soon..
Tell them Black Rooster sent you and please view part of my furniture catalogue which is on display on the counter.
    All best,
    Nina

    p.s. love your blog.
