As I was strolling through Inglewood (9th Ave SE) on Saturday, I came upon Leo’s Second Hand Store (1225B 9th Ave SE). I came close to cruising on by . . . had Leo not placed such a large sign that read “Large Discounts” in his front window. How could any thrifty decorator resist that?
To the non-junker Leo’s will seem like complete chaos. Be prepared to dig, move things around and open cupboards and doors as you just never know what you’ll find. And Leo has a lot of everything: old golf clubs (the only thing to catch my husband’s eye), crystal vases, vintage suitcases and a huge selection of Art Deco furniture. It will take you a bit of time to truly explore this store.
The prices are varied. This marble top vanity is priced at $325, but I’m sorry, it may be gone. I got so excited at the price (which is a fraction of what you’d pay for the marble alone) that I practically squealed while explaining all the possible uses to my husband and three people flocked to it once I had moved on. The beautiful, octagonal marquetry hall table, top pic, was only $80 and I was very intrigued by the brass chest, below, for $50. (I confess I’m still very amateur when it comes to “junking” so if any of you happen to know whether I stumbled on TRUE treasure do let me know . . . secretly of course.)
Finally, I’ve always had a soft spot for Art Deco, but one browse around any of the antique/thrift shops I’ve visited is proof that Art Deco is certainly not in vogue right now. That means stores like Leo’s are filled to the brim with great pieces, priced low to move. The dresser in the top pic was in great condition save for a few scuffs and scratches and was priced at just $100. Try finding a dresser anywhere else (let alone one made of solid wood) for $100. And remember Leo’s sign . . . he offers LARGE DISCOUNTS.
If you’re keen to give junking a try in Calgary, see Leo.

I’ve totally just gotten into junking too. Such a great way to spend a Saturday afternoon. That art deco dresser is a great find!
