Factors to Consider When Planting a Tree at Home

Factors to Consider When Planting a Tree at Home

Planting a tree may seem hard but knowing the basics will surely make the process effortless.

Step 1: Select the Tree

Decide which type of tree you want. While there are several species of trees, it is best to consult with your local nursery and buy the plant there. They would know which trees would grow well with the weather conditions of your locality.

Plus, most of their plants have been grown locally. It means the tree will have a higher likelihood of surviving when you plant it because it is well-adapted to the conditions of your locality.

Step 2: Select a Site

Secondly, consider the space or the area in your garden where you want to plant the tree. Keep in mind that planting a tree while facing north means that it can serve as a windbreaker. All other directions can help with cooling your home.

Don’t forget to take into consideration the underground pipes. When trees grow, their roots can go deep and be strong, or it can go the other way, and the pipes might obstruct the growth of the tree, so it won’t grow well. Either way, you don’t want to spend extra money for the renovation of pipes.

Step 3: Timing

You should remember that planting trees also requires timing. The best time to plant trees would depend on the species of the tree. If it is a deciduous tree, then it would be best to plant it during spring and fall. Again, ask your local nursery to know when it is best to grow a tree species so your money won’t go to waste.

Step 4: Plant

Once you have decided on the type of tree, site, and when to grow, the last step is to plant. Follow these steps to plant:

  • Measure the diameter of the root ball and clear an area that is about three times its size.
  • Dig a hole that measure twice the size of the root ball.
  • If the roots are compacted, carefully loosen them
  • Lastly, place the tree in the hole and fill it with water and soil. Make sure that the soil is settled and get rid of air pockets.
