Do you believe in decorating portents? Apparently I do. Back in July I ordered a range of fabric samples from mid-century specialist, Winterbeachmodern.com. When my first choice was sold out from under me, I went back to the well for more options and while I was mulling things over I happened upon a country antiques barn where I unearthed a dusty pair of lemon yellow ceramic lamps for the unbelievable price of $5 for the pair. I let the lamps seal the deal on which fabric to choose for the daybed; I went with Maharam/Kvadrat's Messenger pattern in Canary yellow ($103 for 10.25 yards).

The Toronto District School Board has opened up its fall course roster and there are six spots left in the 11-week upholstery class running Saturday mornings from 9:30 am - 12:30 pm, beginning September 17. The class costs $223 and covers the basics including furniture stripping, frame reinforcing, cutting, sewing, laying fabric and foam. I'm already signed up and I'd love to have some styleNorth cohorts to keep me company. Taught by a master upholsterer, the classes are held at the Burnhamthorpe City Adult Learning Centre (500 The East Mall) in Etobicoke, a pain to get to but what are you going to do?

Project Runway judge Nina Garcia often describes this or that design as being "very editorial," meaning it will jump off a page and look good in her magazine. I can only assume that's why Studio Pepe Heykoop's fugly Skin collection is featured in today's Globe and Mail. If this ridiculous design from the Netherlands is available in Canada, Globe Style editor Danny Sinopoli is keeping the details to himself. You can bet the chairs cost a small fortune, which further begs the question, what kind of slobbering trend addict would shell out hard-earned smack for something so preposterous? Get a load of the Martin Margiela chair, below, described on the Pepe Heykoop site as "dirty chique." Need I say more?

As I mentioned in my posts about my first upholstery class at RE:Style Studio, my workshop buddy was a rock 'n' roll dad from Hamilton named Jay who hauled his beat-up La-Z-Boy recliner into the city hoping to give it a new lease on life and learn as much as he could in the process. Can you imagine tackling something this complicated for your very first project? Well, Jay was up for the challenge and he was in good hands with instructor Andrea Ford, who helped him wrestle — sometimes rather literally — that chair into submission.

It goes without saying that I'm no Jean-Michel Frank. But I was so inspired by the French designer's eponymous monograph by Pierre-Emmanuel Martin-Vivier (Rizzoli) that I decided to give my humble IKEA Fornbro tables the Frank treatment with custom upholstered tops. Of course, my tops are swathed in man-made vinyl rather than Frank's preferred parchment or shagreen, but nevertheless, the treatment has given them a real lift. The tables feel quite luxe despite the bargain nature of the surface material. The vinyl wipes clean in a jiffy and I'll never again have to worry about nicking the surface with a glass.
