Upstairs, Downstairs on Locke Street South

Hamilton's reputation is tainted by the view of pollution-belching, steel plants along the Queen Elizabeth Way. But there's lots of reason to get off the highway and Locke Street South is one of the best. Sometimes called "antique alley", the strip is full of antique and home décor stores, alternative grocers, cafes, bakeries and bistros. A recent visit to a few shops confirms that the neighbourhood continues to please.

Kilby, has occupied this location for more than 60 years.

And no wonder! The Mandir is probably the most decorative building in all of Canada.

Doors Open Toronto: The Albany Club

Friday, May 22, 2009

It’s not the grandest or most ornate building on this year’s Doors Open Toronto roster—I’m saving that for tomorrow—but it’s certainly one of the most historic. Designed in 1840 by John Howard, the architect who bequeathed High Park to the city, the Albany Club was founded in 1882 by Canada’s first Prime Minister, Sir John A. Macdonald, above. Tomorrow (May 23) marks the first time the Albany Club has opened its doors to the great unwashed, a gesture that acknowledges the City's 175th birthday and the 10th anniversary of Doors Open Toronto.
