Maison & Objet, a swish, modern furnishing store on Boulevard St-Laurent, is carrying an English line of luggage-style case pieces that got Mike and I pretty excited. There are chests, consoles, side tables (in black steel, OMG!), even a desk in mock-croc. Toronto designer Timothy Mather used a similar, mirrored chest in his room at the JLT Showhouse this year. The pieces are pricey, in the $3,000 - $5,000 range but it's a lot of look and a real conversation starter.

While scouting for potential Canada Day items, I checked in with quintessential Canadian retailer, the Hudson's Bay Company (HBC), where I knew they'd started covering chairs and other furnishings with their iconic point blankets. I was a little surprised to see that the Bay has expanded (or is it diluted?) its classic line of four-stripe blankets to include solids and stripes in red, grey, light blue, pink, even a rich burgundy.

Can a graphic designer step outside his comfort zone to design furniture? Can a chef use his kitchen as inspiration for a dining table? That's the question Casalife owner Rob Whitfield was trying to answer when he asked professionals from related fields to collaborate with him in the creation of Mi casa, Su casa. The new furniture line will be unveiled tonight with a swish launch party at Casalife.

Our newly tidy and organized laundry room/tool station may not look like much to you but to us it's a revelation. I had never used pegboard before but I honestly cannot believe the difference $20 and a couple of hours can make. The actual pegboard only cost a tenner and the pegs were another $10. And now, instead of pawing through a mess of bags and rags and rooting through two over-stuffed tool boxes, I can instantly find what I seek.

Kevin is one of the best stylists I’ve met. He sometimes works with Leslie Zysman at Toronto’s Eclectisaurus, which is how I discovered the undeniable force of his talent. I was at the store one day then went back the next afternoon to pick something up and discovered that the shop had been completely re-arranged. Kevin had worked his magic, re-styling, re-organizing, re-imagining vignettes. I requested a lesson then and there.
