I was like a kid in a candy shop this week as I toured the brand new Calligaris Toronto store (170 King Street East), and not just because so much of the furniture is candy coloured. Lots of home decor retailers claim to be in the sweet spot between high- and low-end but Calligaris is the real deal, beautifully designed Italian furnishings that aren't disposable but won't break the bank either. Yes, you might need to save up a little to buy some of the pricier items but most of this stuff is actually within reach price-wise.

There’s a lot more to Maharaja: The Splendour of India’s Royal Courts than decorative art but the decorative items that are featured are definitely worth the price of admission. Opening tomorrow at Toronto's Art Gallery of Ontario, Maharaja features 200 objects spanning nearly three centuries and it’s not just about golden thrones and silver carriages, though there are indeed stellar examples of both. Some of the most surprising items come at the end of the show in a section dubbed “The Modern Maharaja,” which includes art deco furnishings by Émile-Jacques Ruhlmann and Eckart Muthesius, photographs by Man Ray and Cecil Beaton and jewels by Cartier.

I'm probably the only Craigslist junkie whose heart skipped a beat when I saw the high back chair at left. Too old lady, you think? Not in the right hands. Imagine it in acid green or maybe a psychedelic print à la Austin Powers. Or how about all white, legs and all? Toronto's Queen Street East is the city's best mid-century shopping drag and sometimes a trip down there can be the cause of considerable heartache. Like yesterday, for instance. At Phil'z (792 Queen Street East, 416.461.9913), I fell in love with what my companions and I dubbed the Hammock Chair. Shopkeeper Cynthia doesn't have any info regarding its provenance but what we all know is that the chair is a knock-out!

As promised, here's a little survey of the newest entrants on Toronto's high-end decor strip along Yonge Street between Rosedale and Summerhill subway stations. This neck of the decorating woods is mostly out of my snack bracket and yet I find myself trolling this drag more than any other. The proximity of so many great shops is dizzying and I'm always inspired by how the goods are styled and staged in these posh, aspirational showrooms.
