I wish I could say that the kitchen became radically different well before Christmas 2008 but I would be lying. Apart from purging the plants, adding cork flooring and purchasing a few odds and ends over the years, we lived with the louvered pine cabinets and a teal green counter top for 10 years! Not the kitchen of someone who should know better.

When I saw styleNorth contributor Lindsay Bowman’s fantastic spare room makeover on Fine Things and Big Dreams it immediately brought back a similar project Mike and I undertook a couple of years ago. We got similar results to Lindsay’s but executed in a completely different way. Lindsay taped off the pattern that would remain when the wine bottle was empty, whereas Mike and I projected our pattern onto the wall with an old-fashioned transparency projector and then tried to stay within the lines as we filled in the pattern.

Lke all great do-it-yourselfers, Simon had a vision for this trash/treasure. He took one of the terracotta birds to Home Depot where they colour-matched some exterior paint. Now, all put together, you’d swear it was a genuine tile roof. The Francos have recreated a Madeira country house right down to the shutters and little swallows adorning the doorway.
