Do It Yourself: Budget Office Makeover

Last fall I studied the history of furniture from ancient civilizations (Egyptian, Greek, Roman) through to the Georgian period. That is a lot of design history to draw inspiration from, and it was certainly on my mind as I plotted, planned and painted my home office/guest bedroom. This is the basement storage room canvas from which I had to create the monochromatic, classical-inspired, brocante-style vibe I was going for. I wanted an office that served as a space to work on school projects and doubled as a guest bedroom.

Under normal circumstances the Mushroom Studio wouldn't merit a styleNorth post but when I called the Sculpture Garden administrator to ask about the project she happened to mention that the artist had been "quite particular" about the furnishings that went into the "studio". I had inadvertently stumbled upon a story about a real Canadian decorating a highly unusual space.

Cube Envy: In The Pink

Harsh florescent lighting is the bane of cube-dwellers everywhere. The under-mounted fixture in my office cubicle was so cold and unforgiving (above left) that I almost never used it. And then an idea dawned; I removed the acrylic cover from the fixture, below, and gave it a once-over with a pink highlighter. I’ve often heard that pink light is the most flattering and who can’t use a little of that? Colouring complete, I popped the acrylic back into its slot and voila, suddenly my cube has a sweet, warm glow, above left. Now I use the light all the time instead of almost never.
