This weekend offers Toronto house junkies an opportunity to experience one of the city’s most precious jewels, the quaint, cottage-y neighbourhoods on Algonquin and Ward’s Islands. Dubbed the Toronto Island House and History Tour, the June 13 event has been organized by Grannies in Spirit, a group supporting the Stephen Lewis Foundation’s Grandmothers to Grandmothers campaign, a project that has so far raised more than $7 million for African grandmothers and the children in their care. Last Sunday, I was lucky enough to enjoy a preview of three island homes with one of the tour organizers, Paulette Pelletier-Kelly.

Lynda Reeves and the Canadian House & Home team have poured their design and decorating talents into an Oakville, Ontario showhouse, the grand prize in this year's Princess Margaret Hospital Sweepstakes. One extraordinarily lucky winner will claim the house and contents valued at approximately $3.5 million. Talk about sitting pretty! The 5,665 sq. ft. house is free to tour until November 18 if you're game for a pleasant fall drive.

If you're in Toronto and are free this evening, OCAD is screening koolhaas houselife, a documentary by filmmakers Ila Bêka and Louise Lemoine about the House in Bourdeaux, "a masterpiece of contemporary architecture," designed in 1998 by Rem Koolhaas/OMA. The film's central conceit is to follow the housekeeper and maintenance staff as they conduct their rounds of the building on a normal day.

Among the seven residences featured on this year's Cabbagetown Tour of Homes are a pair of former semi-detached houses now conjoined as 357 Wellesley Street East (above right), and 369 Wellesley Street East, above left, a Victorian-era corner store now graciously converted into a bright, family home. It rained for last year's tour making for a sloppy and humid trek through the cobbled streets but Sunday's weather forecast promises a much finer afternoon.
