Canadian Cool: Casalife Pushes the Envelope

Can a graphic designer step outside his comfort zone to design furniture? Can a chef use his kitchen as inspiration for a dining table? That's the question Casalife owner Rob Whitfield was trying to answer when he asked professionals from related fields to collaborate with him in the creation of Mi casa, Su casa. The new furniture line will be unveiled tonight with a swish launch party at Casalife.

Stepping into Wenda Thomson and Gray Abraham’s stupendous art deco apartment is like being transported into a 1930s film set; Fred and Ginger would be right at home dancing from room to de-lovely room. The period furnishings and details—right down to the window casings and air exchangers—are so precise it’s uncanny. Such are the rewards of a lifetime spent collecting decorative art.

Identify This Table?

I dropped into Simone Interiors (1690 Queen Street West, 416.530.2948) on Saturday where this fantastic dining set is up for grabs for just $1,095 (table with two leaves and six chairs, two of them head chairs). While the set is unquestionably mid-century, shop owner Lin Gibson doesn't know anything else about it, including what kind of wood it's made of. My guess was rosewood but Lin says her wood guru thinks mahogany.
