Did you ever imagine that my $20 mid-century side chairs could end up looking like this? Neither did I, which is why I sold a pair of them last week for $100, which represented an excellent return on my investment but a supremely stupid move in retrospect now that I've seen the pictures of these James Mont chairs, kindly provided by Troy Seidman of Caviar 20.

I got an email today from styleNorth reader Elizabeth who wrote to say that "the beautiful Milo Baughman chairs on Craigslist that you wrote about last year . . . well, I lucked out and got them! The evolving nature of our decroating is leaning much more heavily to the Arts and Crafts side and we are re-selling our Baughman chairs on Craigslist. My original prediction that the chairs would probably wind up "in a Leslieville shop window next week for two or three times the price" still holds.

Ed Wormley is one of my favorite mid-century furniture designers and when I saw the Craigslist ad above, I was struck by how similar the chairs are to Wormley's famous Captain Chair (below left) and also to his Petite Armchair (below centre), albeit with a soupçon of Scandinavian flair. StyleNorth reader Debbie wrote to me with her latest project, the dining chair makeover above. "I found the chairs on Craigslist for $15 (for all 4!!)," writes Debbie. A little bit of steel wool and elbow grease revived the chrome, a few coats of white paint on the cane backs and new Ikea fabric for the seats, and they look pretty good to me."

My IKEA snobbery knows no bounds. The prejudice was brought home to me this morning while surfing Craigslist and clicking through on an ad for the potentially cool lounge chair above ($150); the second I saw it was from IKEA I said, "pass". Nevermind that I'm in the market for a decent lounge chair or that this one happens to reference one of my all-time-favorite designs, the Zurich Leisure chair. My kneejerk reaction is if it's from IKEA, pass.
