Pantone Is Always Right

Perusing the magazine racks a few days ago I was struck by just how right Pantone was in picking pink as THE colour for 2011, or more specifically, Honeysuckle (swatch at left). It's no real surprise that British House and Garden (above left), Canada's Style At Home (above centre) and Living Etc (above right and below) are on top of the trend right out of the gate -- it's only January, after all. But these trend forecasts are made more than a year in advance to allow magazine editors, clothing and industrial designers to stay ahead of the curve. Pantone's Colour Symposium looking ahead to spring/summer 2012 was held last month in New York City and in June 2011, the International Colour Association (AIC) will hold its mid-term meeting in Zurich to prognosticate about what lies even further down the line.

Vivid and Vibrant For 2011

My dear readers, I was so busy soaking in stillness yesterday that I neglected to go online and wish you all a fantastic and fruitful 2011! The year just past was the most difficult of my life so far and I hope never to see the likes of it again. Yet, as bad as 2010 was for me, I still have lots to be grateful for and high on my list is styleNorth, which you continue to make possible through your support and encouragement. Thank you, from the bottom of my heart. So what's with the photo? I had in mind to do a round-up of shelter mag predictions for the decor trends of the coming year and essentially it all boiled down to pattern and colour. I snapped the shot on a pre-Christmas stop at Fiori, one of Toronto's best accessory and flower shops and it seemed to sum up the decorating forecast. So whether you choose Suzani or stripes, orange, turquoise or honeysuckle (Pantone's colour of 2011), I wish you a vibrant and vivid 2011 -- take risks with your decorating and reap the rewards!

Tim’s Holiday House Tour

In Apartment Therapy's 2010 Room For Colour Contest the top three international entries were all from Toronto -- yay team! The winner by more than a length was Tim (yours truly placed second) who kindly agreed to let me show off his gorgeous waterfront condo, which was beautifully decorated for the holiday season. What impressed me most about my visit to Tim's is his lavish attention to detail. Every corner, every shelf boasts a well-composed vignette, no opportunity for display is wasted -- it's like being in a showroom but without the homogeneity that the description suggests.

Barrymore Wow!

Let's face it, decor blogs are about pretty pictures and striking vignettes and when I see one I try to capture it. I was in Toronto's Barrymore Furniture last week when I was stopped in my tracks by this over-the-top Christopher Guy display by Showroom and Design Manager Karen Ottenbrite. The strong colours and the sheen of the silk upholstery were rivetting, nevermind the divine Paul Evans-inspired mirror. None of this stuff is even remotely in my price range (mirror $3,760, settee $7,290, hand-carved table $2,890) but display is about fantasy and this one certainly carried me away. In the photo below you can see how the vignette draws you down the long corridor and that's a trick any of us can borrow -- be brave, go bold!

Dumpster Diving Pays Off

I had to do some pretty fancy gymnastics to fish this lamp out of the garbage on Saturday. I was thwarted by a fence protecting the trash, so I went home and got a coat hanger that allowed me to reach over and pull it out with the hook. The lamp is in nearly perfect condition with a speckled white and grey texture on the lower half. I had a small dinner party that evening where we discussed my fabulous find and what size and shape of shade would be right for the lamp. No one suggested anything like what I found yesterday while walking Judy -- I am not making this up, I swear! There in the middle of a gravel car pad outside my building was this made-to-measure, lined silk shade, cast off and left for dead. Coincidence? I think not.
