Moroccan Seasoning

I’ve heard it said that the good we do comes back to us but I never imagined that included coffee tables. Many months ago I helped a friend pull together a new apartment. Now, circumstance is taking her in a new direction and she offered me the table back, one of my all-time favorite finds. And it just so happens that I recently purchased a vintage Moroccan berber carpet on Craiglist for the absurdly low price of $150 (the rug is 7’ x 11’ in amazing condition!). I know the rug is not to everyone’s taste. My friend Doreen came to dinner last night and thought it was one step up from hideous.

The Wear and Tear Costs Extra

The photos don't do these rugs justice; they are much more beautiful in their 6' x 9' glory than these digital snapshots suggest. Still, I admit I find the concept somewhat dubious, like paying extra for distressed leather or denim. But what do I know? These carpets are piping hot following a very successful launch in January at Domotex, the world's largest rug fair in Hanover, Germany. The carpets shown are presently hanging in the window of chic Toronto rug boutique, Modern Weave; I spotted rugs from the same line in a recent ABC Carpet ad.

I know you're not supposed to buy art to match your sofa but how about a rug? The minute I saw Scott Young's textural blue photo, left, I knew I had to have it for my kitchen to go with those amazing flat weave carpets of mine. Scott's image of an old door at the Distillery District received honourable mention in Toronto's Building A Great City Together photo contest. I tracked Scott down and he was most obliging -- he sold me the 11" x 17" print, matted and ready to frame for just $99.

I have no idea which cushions, carpets, runners and blankets Toronto textile artist Bev Hisey will be discounting at her annual Christmas sample sale December 3 - 5 but Bev, if you've got one of those orange, felted wool numbers, above left, put my name on it! Hisey has been really branching out lately with some exquisite new lines; I especially love her wildly vibrant carpets, above, although I'd be surprised to see any of those being sold at a discount.

Cheap Thrills: Cowhide Rug Sale

I'm laid-up in bed this week with a merciless cold so all I have for you today is a little tidbit that came in over the transom from Tandy Leather Factory in Mississauga. Mike and I have purchased a number of hides from Tandy and I can vouch for the quality and service. If you buy a $35 membership you receive a big discount on everything in the store. Tandy's hair-on hides (32 - 40 square feet) are priced at $240 until October 31, but if you buy a membership you can take one home for just $180 (+ $35 = $215). Elsewhere, hides typically retail for $600 or more.
