It's ridiculously short notice, I know, but I only received the flyer yesterday for Waddington's Cobourg's bi-annual fine furniture auction. And let me tell you, there is some sweet stuff in this sale. Do you remember the post I did about designer Michael S. Smith and his masterful use of pairs? Well there are some very pretty pairs on offer, including the handsome tchotchkes above and the pair of side chairs below that once belonged to the late Robertson Davies [there are several items from the writer's estate in the sale].

Bev Hisey Studio Sale This Weekend

Wednesday, November 30, 2011

With a storefront facing Trinity Bellwoods Park not far from Ossington Avenue, Toronto textile designer Bev Hisey doesn't need to do the One of a Kind Show (on now until December 4 at Direct Energy Centre), she just has to throw open her door. And that's exactly what she's doing this weekend with her annual Studio Sale (Saturday 11 am - 6 pm and Sunday 12 - 5 pm). Featuring cut rate prices on some of her most popular designs Bev all but promises you won't walk away empty handed. I'll be there for sure, hopefully ahead of you in line for the best stuff. Foundstyle is teaming up with Bev to do a mini pop-up store of vintage treasures just to keep things extra interesting.

Persian Carpet Closeout Sales

Tuesday, November 29, 2011

I typically buy rugs at auction because that's where the best values are to be found albeit with limited selection in terms of size, style, colour, etc. But since I need a rug right now for a client job, I've been doing a lot of carpet shopping lately and I've come across two Persian carpet closeout sales in Toronto, on now until the end of December. That's Ali Keshvari, pictured, proprietor of Kensington Carpets (193 Baldwin St., 416.260.1144) working hard for a sale as he flips and flips and flips carpets in search of just the right design. Ali is closing his Toronto location and consolidating business in Calgary where he has another store and that means sale prices from 50 - 80 per cent off regular retail from now until the end of the year. It was Ali who sold me the carpet I installed in my happy client's home on Sunday (more on that soon).

Second Floor at Elte

What does it say about me that it took me three looks at this sign before I stopped reading Drugs and finally saw Rugs? The neon greets you as you come up the stairs into Elte's newest retail space, the trendy, contemporary Second Floor at Elte. Sex, Rugs & Rock 'N' Roll is a new carpet line featuring of-the-moment styles at mid-range price points. And while the neon signals the general attitude, it's the vignette below that says the most about where Elte's going with the concept; the second floor of the flagship store, which opened Friday, is aimed squarely at lofters and condo-dwellers seeking clean, contemporary interiors with a somewhat minimalist aesthetic.

Elte Outlet — Worth the Drive?

Wednesday, March 30, 2011

Toronto's Elte used to consign it's clearance merchandise to a large back corner of its enormous flagship store in the Castlefield Design District. Now, that merch has moved to the new outlet store off Weston Road, north of Highway 7. Is it worth the drive? I'd have to say yes. Discounts range from 30 - 60 per cent off list prices, which puts some of the otherwise aspirational offerings within reach of the common man and woman. This being a clearance outlet, however, selection is spotty. Many tickets proclaim, "Last one," which means not only are you unlikely to find a mate for that perfect slipper or side chair, you also have to make up your mind on the spot because if you take a day or two to think it over the piece will be gone.
