All hail serendipity! A few months back I was mooching through Toronto's Riverside and Leslieville neighbourhoods, popping in and out of furnishing shops, as is my want. At Elbers Antiques (777 Queen Street East, 416.466.3938) I spotted the pretty terrific brass and marble impala bust at left. I admired the piece, noted the $85 price, then moved on. Several shops later, I stopped in at Fred (1091 Queen Street East) where, rather remarkably, I found the awesome brass impala bookends below for $45. I walked away from both items but they stayed with me and a few days later I went back to play let's make a deal.

About a month ago I received an email from Elte announcing Kelly Wearstler's new line of bedding with a prominent photo of said linens and a whole lot of brass, above left. Well, if it's good enough for Kelly, it's good enough for me. Actually Mike and I have been "collecting" brass for the last few years. It started innocently enough; we wanted some bedside lamps to work with our gold folding screen headboard and brass seemed to hit the right note. After those lamps came another. Then another. And another. Now our place is the house of brass.

Decorating should be fun, which is one reason I resist the temptation to go all Martha Stewart on you, dear readers. I know most of your homes aren't "done" yet and neither is ours; we slink along changing things up a little or a lot at a time. But a recent rash of brass polishing at our house made me suddenly aware of the details that have gone overlooked for years.

If the JLT Showhouse and the cover of Elle Decor (May 2009) are any indication, lilac is the colour of the moment. Here in Ontario the lilacs are in full, fabulous flower so it's easy to bring the heady scent and those beautiful mauve shades indoors. Here are some tips on how to prolong the life of cut lilacs . . .

The arc lamp wasn’t supposed to be for us; it was for my friend Elena who I pressured into taking it because I knew it was perfect for her space. She didn’t entirely agree, although had she seen it in full working order I’m certain she’d have come around. After picking it up from the Craigslist seller we drove it straight to Elena’s apartment where we discovered there was a problem with the assembly mechanism. And the lamp itself wasn’t working . . .
