Library: Kids’ Rooms & Baby Décor

As the mother of a five-year daughter, a part-time designer, with grand ideas and a limited budget, I’ve always complained about the lack of design magazines or books geared especially for kid spaces that (a) don’t cost a fortune and (b) spend too much of the page focusing on pretty close-ups of insignificant items, such as crayons in a bucket.

Shops: Paloranta Art & Furnishing

Equal parts art gallery and Scandinavian specialty shop, Paloranta is a newcomer on Queen Street West having opened late last year. The shop is the exclusive purveyor of work by young Finnish artist Teemu Paloranta, in addition to carrying products from Finland’s Marimekko and Secto and Denmark’s Eva Solo.

Where to Find: John Robshaw Bedding

I’ve seen a few blog posts recently about John Robshaw’s fabulous line of Indian-inspired fabrics and bedding. Naturally, I wanted to find out where his products are available in Canada. The designer’s website lists just two locations—both in Toronto—Kol Kid (670 Queen Street West, 416.681.0368) for child’s bedding, and Lucca (2031 Yonge Street, 416.485.4999) for bed sets, shams and bolsters.

Shops: La Merceria

La Merceria is truly a curiosity shop; part housewares store, part neighborhood café, it has a charm all its own, a very European kind of charm. Quirky retail displays have a vintage feel but the goods are all very of the moment; Dwell Studios bedding ($275), Mepra and Roost flatware, dishes from Germany's Kahla and Pot Luck Fare, and stemware from Bormioli Rocco ($7 per glass). There's also a full line of environmentally friendly soaps and cleaners from Caldrea.

Inspiration: Green Tea Design
