When Cilque asked me to give their sheets a try I was keen. I'd actually been on the lookout for a quality sheet set in ivory to go with my crewel bedspread; it so happens that Cilque's creme brulee colour is a perfect match. And although the sheets are cool on the skin, everything I've read about silk's thermal properties suggests they'll be cozy and warm in the winter, too. Silk is nature's strongest natural fiber and these well-made sheets, consisting of 19 momme weight Chinese silk, are machine washable, although they must be hung to dry after a short tumble on low heat. The only caveat I'll put forward is that Cilque sheets are so, well, silky, that it's hard to keep them tucked in; the bedspread wants to slide right off and the top sheet likes to glide out from beneath the mattress. But it's a small price to pay for cool comfort on a warm summer night.

Mike and I popped into a swish bedding store on the weekend in search of a sheet set to go with our amazing new crewel-work duvet cover. We found an expensive set of ivory sheets marked down 25 per cent but not even the discount made them affordable. This got me thinking about my discount standards and I came to the conclusion that generally speaking, I need be saving at least 30 per cent off the suggested retail price before I'll reach for my wallet. How about you? How big a price break do you require before your trigger finger gets itchy?

I've heard that finding great bunk beds is a lot tougher than it used to be. Toronto's BunkHouse Kids is attracting customers from as far away as Burlington and Hamilton because there are so few other options in this particular niche market. Be warned, however, that taking home a room from BunkHouse will take a significant bite out of your pay packet. This stuff's not cheap! But the quality is good, with Canadian-made, solid wood construction, deep drawers and convenient trundles for those de rigueur sleepovers.

Surrounded by condo towers and pressed up against the CN Tower and Rogers' Centre, Leon's new flagship store in Toronto's historic Roundhouse should go a long way to spucing up the chain's suburban image. Now, your "no money miracle" comes with exposed brick, rustic beams and polished concrete floors. The soaring ceiling and arching, double-height windows are nothing if not impressive.

While scouting for potential Canada Day items, I checked in with quintessential Canadian retailer, the Hudson's Bay Company (HBC), where I knew they'd started covering chairs and other furnishings with their iconic point blankets. I was a little surprised to see that the Bay has expanded (or is it diluted?) its classic line of four-stripe blankets to include solids and stripes in red, grey, light blue, pink, even a rich burgundy.
