After several years of decorating and re-decorating, I’ve decided to put my passion to work for paying clients. I’ve teamed up with stylist/thrift king Kevin Hirshfeld-Stewart to form styleNorth Decorating, an interior design service for people with stylish dreams but smallish budgets.
There’s a Canadian TV designer who on one show bemoaned doing a living/dining space on a paltry budget of only $15,000! Folks, Kevin and I could do a whole house for $15,000 and it would not look like budget work! Neither would it look like a Pottery Barn or Restoration Hardware catalogue so if that’s a look you cherish, we are not your guys.
Below are examples of our work, all of it featured here on styleNorth over the years. Although we’re both partial to glamour, Kevin and I can do calm and casual, and we will happily incorporate traditional elements into a room design. But our spaces will never be cookie cutter; there is always WOW factor in a styleNorth room whether it’s a striking or unusual piece of furniture or a wild accessory, window or wall treatment. If you’re not comfortable with that then once again, we are not your guys.
WOW requires some faith on the client’s part; we consult with you at length to determine your tastes and needs. We use or reinvent your best pieces and take our inspiration from treasured artworks or carpets. Then we set out to enhance your room scheme with furnishings and finishes found at auctions, retail specialists and by scouring Craigslist for chic yet affordable options.
Kevin and I don’t shop at Bombay & Co. or G.H. Johnson or any number of home decor retailers that trade in thinly-veneered fiberboard furnishings made overseas. Our preference is for sturdy, vintage pieces pulled together with style and panache. Usually it takes some hunting and a bit of waiting for lacquering or reupholstery but in the end we guarantee you’ll be happy with the results and with the money you saved by choosing us over a higher-end, bigger budget decorator.
