On October 2 and 3 I'll be at the Fall Home Show at Toronto's Better Living Centre talking up the many advantages of buying vintage furnishings. With cheap goods flooding into Canada from overseas, the phrase “buyer beware” has never been more apropos. One of the best ways to find lasting quality at affordable prices is to buy vintage pieces.

How disappointing to see that Metropolitan Home has stepped down into the mud of vacuous celebrity worship. A Q&A with Sarah Jessica Parker is one of six stories featured on the cover of the October 2009 issue of Metropolitan Home magazine but turn inside and you'll discover that the "interview" with SJP is a three-inch spit-ball about La Parker's favorite things including her preferences in ice cream, sneakers and sunglasses. The only decor-related bullet reveals that the star's favorite paint colour is geranium red. Wow! I'm glad we let our subscription lapse if this is the best Donna Warner and her team can come up with.

I've driven from Toronto to Montreal in an Autoshare cargo van chasing a Craigslist score -- my amazing chrome dresser which cost just $200. I also drove to Mississauga for a glass table top that the seller had measured wrong making the trip a complete waste of my time. And that's one of the drawbacks of Craigslist road trips; sometimes they're goose chases. How far would you drive for a potential score?

Ipé is an inexpensive alternative to teak and is often used for outdoor decking. These steps will last for years and will bleach down to a consistent light grey colour. They may cost more than poured concrete steps but the look is infinitely sexier and way more custom. Its tremendous durability makes ipé wood worth the modest investment.
