Out of the blue, I received an email yesterday from Catherine, the woman who purchased my Louis XV sofa back in early July. She and her husband had been hunting for a French-style sofa for many months and immediately fell in love with mine (see it here on my About page). They paid me what I was asking with no haggling, I booked an Autoshare van on the spot and within an hour it was at their house. But that's not where the story ends. Catherine wrote to me yesterday with these photos of her reborn sofa and the following story . . .

Art Cubes Designed For Display

For some, necessity is the mother of invention; for Amanda Shapiro it was the door to a new career. Shapiro's fine art education led her to work in the nightclub industry where one of her tasks was to create industrial-strength, plexiglass shadowboxes to display art and memorabilia. It's a specialized area that required Shapiro to source suppliers and fabricators, contacts that came in handy when, as a new Mom, she went looking to preserve her own memories such as daughter Aviva's artwork and baby clothes. Late last year she launched Re-Formed, a fledgling Toronto-based company specializing in what she calls art cubes.

Punch and Judy, Together Forever

The circle was closed Thursday when we said goodbye to my darling dog Judy. She’d had health problems off and on since Punch passed in July and last week she took a terrible turn with some serious liver trouble. I prayed much of the day that Punch would be there waiting for her on the other side to show her around. Knowing that they’re together again is the only comfort I can find in her passing. The dogs came from a litter of three and the breeder insisted that they go together because they’d been inseparable since birth, a gang of two. I buried her on Friday beside her brother and marked the spot with the only thing I bought at Christie in September, a cast iron door stop of two Scotties leaning against each other, it’s just the most fitting marker in the world and I’m so glad I bought it when I had the chance. I don’t know what I’ll do with all the love I used to pour into them; I pray it doesn’t go to waste.

The worst part of moving is that you can't find anything. I have a favorite photo of our boy Punch taken at a friend's cottage where he is calm and regal and you really get a sense of his size and handsome bearing. But the photo is eluding me this morning, this morning when I can't sleep because the loss of him is still so fresh and raw. Mike and I said goodbye to our happy chappy last night, the cancer had taken too firm a hold of him. So I'm publishing the best shot I can find, taken in one of Punch's favorite places with one of his favorite people, Mike.

Last weekend, Mike and I attended a housewarming party at our friend Ingrid’s new apartment. While touring her incredible space I paused to ask about a particularly striking carpet in the music room. “I’m so glad you asked,” responded our hostess. “That carpet belonged to my grandmother and it’s one of the only things she [...]
