A Fresh Take on Taxidermy

Wednesday, March 18, 2015 by Chris

Walking past the newly re-opened Peter Pan Bistro on Toronto's Queen Street West (No. 373), I was stopped in my tracks by this art/decor installation from UK artist Debbie Lawson. The restaurant has installed three large would-be taxidermy animal heads, each created out of Persian carpet. The pieces are beyond striking.

Buyers Beware on CBC’s Four Rooms

Friday, March 14, 2014 by Chris

On Monday I took some time out to visit Toronto’s 507 Antiques where CBC TV had assembled three of the four stars of Four Rooms for a little press junket. The show is a hybrid of Dragon’s Den and Antiques Roadshow in which hopeful sellers meet privately with four dealers seeking offers for their items. The catch is that they must take what they think is the best offer on the spot, once they leave a dealer’s room and move on to the next buyer, there’s no turning back, the previous offer is dead.

Wake Up Your Creativity with Karen

Monday, February 17, 2014 by Chris

At the Interior Design Show last month, I caught up with my friend, the supremely talented Karen Johnston (Mosaicworks). She'll be in Toronto this coming weekend to give a mosaic workshop at Artscape Youngplace (180 Shaw Street, Rm 107). The class runs Saturday (10 - 3:30 pm) and Sunday 10 - 12 pm) for $130 (cost includes supplies and use of tools but not lunch, there's a great little cafe on site). So if you've been itching to get crafty this is a great opportunity to wake up your creativity.

Christie Antiques September 7

I haven't attended the Christie Antiques Show since it was taken over by the Hamilton Conservation Authority so I'll be curious to see whether anything has changed when the show touches down again September 7. Rifling through my photos from the fall 2010 show brought back such pleasant memories — the weather was splendid and the mood across the 10 acre site was positively jolly. With 300 dealers all vying to pry cash from the punters’ pockets there were bargains to be had and an array of goods so varied I was truly impressed. From kitsch to country to Art Deco and mid-century modern, Christie has it all. So circle the date, throw some blankets in the trunk and say “Hi” if you spot me plying the wide, grassy aisles.

New Thrifter Blogs Worth Checking Out

Wednesday, April 3, 2013 by Chris

Recent styleNorth convert Aleysa wrote to give me a head's up about her new blog the Listings List, a curatorial peak at Toronto's online classifieds. Like Take this Sofa and Montreal Digs, Aleysa scours the local classifieds -- in her case, Toronto -- for high style at low prices. Aleysa appears to have a pretty good eye and she isn't just looking at furnishings, she's even digging into car and bicycle listings. Give the Listings List a look. I also had a note from thrifting enthusiast Connie who has created a facebook page called Furnish it With Vintage dedicated her finds and transformations. Good luck ladies and keep the inspiration coming!
