Waddington’s Monthly Art Auction, one of my all-time favorite Toronto sale opportunities, has moved online and taken all the fun and much of the assurance with it. I would never buy art this way. In the past, I’ve been intrigued by an online pic only to be disappointed when I stood in front of the work at the auction preview. Digital photos and computer monitors have fluctuating and unpredictable colour values; often times a painting will turn out to be murkier or less saturated in person than it appears on screen.

His email handle is auctioncaller so World Headquarters owner Mark Taaffe shouldn't have any trouble directing his own sale Monday evening (June 8) beginning at 6:30 pm (2885 Dundas West). Taaffe is clearing out the shop to make room for fresh stock and he won't be adding a premium to auction bids. Could be some fantastic deals in the offing.

Waddington's Brighton is holding a fantastic auction this weekend with the two-day sale of the estate of Mavin Maurer of Toronto. The Fall 2008 sale was a bust with oodles of lots being withdrawn due to buyer disinterest. Since then, the economic news has grown even darker so all bets are off as to next week’s outcome. Yet hope persists. The gloom didn't dampen last month’s Christie’s auction of Yves St-Laurent treasures; when all was said and done the sale grossed $478.65 million (USD), about $100 more than originally estimated.
