Mid-Century Marvel

I wouldn’t be surprised to find such an impressive assemblage of original mid-century furnishings and accessories in the home of a wealthy collector but my sense is that the couple who live in this 1,400-square foot apartment above a store not far from Toronto’s High Park, isn’t especially well-to-do. This is the story of how they pulled together such an astonishingly fine collection of vintage designer pieces by shopping smart and buying what they loved; pedigree and provenance are secondary.

Knowing that Marcelo is a professional landscaper, I expected a beautiful property that showcased his skills and talent. What I didn’t anticipate was the confidence with which stay-at-home Mom Mahela has decorated the interior of the couple’s lovely midtown home. It's time once again for the Cabbagetown Tour of Homes, one of Toronto's best opportunities to snoop around some extremely tasteful abodes. The photos above and below are scalped from one of my very best house tours, the home of decorator Sean Ward and his partner Stephen Fillmore who have agreed to open their door to the masses this year. The annual Tour of Homes is a fundraiser for the Cabbagetown Preservation Association, which works to preserve and enhance this uniquely historic neighbourhood. Tickets for the September 19 event (1 - 5 pm) are $30 each, available online or in person at the Cabbagetown BIA office at 237 Carlton Street (416.921.0857).

Do artists and designers have cooler spaces than the rest of us? Um, yes, as it turns out, at least that’s the conclusion I drew from Design Domestic, a photo exhibit currently up at Toronto’s Design Exchange until August 19. The show presents glimpses of the personal tastes and styles of some well-known Canadian curators and design professionals, people like industrial designer Andrew Jones (no relation), whose dining room is pictured above. Other featured spaces belong to Jason MacIsaac (Ministry of the Interior), Shaun Moore (MADE), Montreal landscape architect Claude Cormier and installation artist An Te Liu (below), among others.

This Box Is My Box

Not long ago, I was at a small dinner party where each of the other guests was the owner of a $1 million-plus property. And there I was moving into a one-bedroom rental apartment. I felt ashamed of my place on the ladder of life, albeit cognizant that there are loads of miserable rich people. I also happen to be a regular reader of blogs like Midwestern Malaise, If The Lampshade Fits and Arren Williams Design Lab where the owners are presently engaged in swish and expensive renovations of beautiful homes. And here I am trying to settle into a 624-sq. ft. box with zero architectural interest.
