While visiting my family in New Brunswick during my summer holidays, Mom and I decided to take a little road trip down Maine's Highway 1, famous for its tiny coastal towns, plentiful fresh seafood, and hundreds of antique shops lining the interstate. To our delight, there were so many antique malls and flea markets that we concluded we'd never make it to Portland if we stopped at every one; we agreed to check out every third or fourth store on our side of the road! Between stops we were able to admire the gorgeous coastal scenery and fit in a traditional Maine lobster roll (or three).

The Calgary Stampede's Western Oasis makes it easy to forget that you're in the middle of the Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth. Around the perimeter, you're free to explore and admire Western inspired photography, paintings, bronze sculptures, and arts and crafts. The work shown, by artist Drew Hunter, marries classic western images with damask details — pretty and rugged at the same time.

At the corner of Centre Street and 7th Avenue SW sits one of the hidden gems of Calgary's art and design community. Since opening its doors in late 2004, Art Central has become a beacon for Calgary's artists and designers, not to mention a trusted source for original Canadian art and design. I stopped by Saturday to meet Ljubica Todorovic, artist and owner of Studio Todorovic and find out a bit more about Art Central.

Vancouver's Gastown district combines historic architecture with a very young vibe thanks to an exciting mix of restaurants, pubs and, much to my delight, a relatively large assortment of modern furniture stores, catering to a wide variety of price points. Among the most exciting is Inform Interiors, Next stop was Inform Interiors (50 Water Street), a store filled with absolutely beautiful treasures and some of the most intriguing furniture I've encountered. Our group wondered where one might put a chair made entirely of Lego (the price wasn't visible, always a bad sign!) or a stool made of ribbon . . .

Over the weekend, I discovered that Calgary is at the centre of a new movement, the Slow Home Movement. Calgarian John Brown is the founder of Slow Home. He is also a registered architect and Professor of Architecture at the University of Calgary. Brown is also a principal in housebrand, a vertically integrated residential architecture firm in Calgary, Canada.
