As a Canadian of Scottish heritage I was looking forward to Homecoming 2009, a 12-month event welcoming back the Scottish diaspora to celebrate Scotland's contributions to the world as well as the 250th anniversary of poet Robert Burns' birth. Although we didn't sample the official Homecoming offerings, we did commemorate in our own way by absorbing the history, grandeur and beauty of Scotland.

My eight-year old asked for a room redo incorporating two of his favourite animated series, SpongeBob Squarepants™ and Fairly Odd Parents. Oh, and it should be blue — not a personal favourite. Then, a few weeks ago I was jolted out of my creative paralysis by a party invitation that my son received. Fast forward to May 8, and Chris's styleNorth post on the terrific fabric resource, Tonic Living. I fell in love with their fabrics and in particular with Bungalow Striped Citron, below. Zing went the strings of my heart . . . you could almost see the neurons firing.

I always find at least two or three great decorating ideas peaking out from shop windows like this one at Espace Pepin, in Old Montreal. Although the shop was closed when I chanced by, I learned from the website that the store is outfitted with owner Lysanne Pepin’s original artwork and that of other Quebec creatives like Montreal lamp artist Alexandre Brault.

Last fall I studied the history of furniture from ancient civilizations (Egyptian, Greek, Roman) through to the Georgian period. That is a lot of design history to draw inspiration from, and it was certainly on my mind as I plotted, planned and painted my home office/guest bedroom. This is the basement storage room canvas from which I had to create the monochromatic, classical-inspired, brocante-style vibe I was going for. I wanted an office that served as a space to work on school projects and doubled as a guest bedroom.
