One of the nice little bonuses of doing a blog is that surprises land in my in-box out of the blue, sometimes delightful surprises like the following message from reader Chris in Kitchener-Waterloo, Ontario. Chris writes:
“A couple of years ago you posted about a reader selling Milo Baughman chairs on Craiglist. Well, I was fortunate enough to be the lucky buyer! They sat in storage or the corner of my place — I rent a 680 sq ft. loft — until a couple of months back when I finally had them reupholstered. I’ve attached a couple of pictures so you can see how they turned out. I still don’t really have room for them, but I like them so much I am just living with an excess of mid-century modern chairs (rough, I know).”
Well done, Chris! I think the chairs looks smashing in their masculine stripe. Chris adds that not only did he find the chairs through styleNorth, he also found his upholsterer thanks to a comment left by reader Jennifer. Chris has nothing but praise for Michael and Louise at Spitalfields in Stratford, Ontario. “Their customer service was fantastic and they did an incredible job on the chairs,” he writes. “They also did an A.J. Donahue/Winnipeg chair for me.”
All told, with fabric, labour and the cost of the chairs, Chris says he spent about $2,500 for the pair. “I don’t think that’s too bad given the value of the chairs,” notes Chris, “and the fact that I’ll have them forever. I recognize it isn’t a bargain basement price, but one new chair would likely cost me that much.”
I would add that nowhere on earth is this exact chair covered in this exact fabric and that uniqueness is an added bonus over and above the cash outlay. Congratulations Chris, and thank you so much for sharing! I hope the original sellers of the chairs are still checking styleNorth occasionally and that they’ll see how their former chairs turned out.
