The Goobye Girls

I was deeply saddened to receive an email from Holly Gnaedinger last week announcing the closing of Twice Found, the “vintage modern” shop she has run with business partner Marie Lyons-Cooper for the past four and a half years. Holly says business has been in a tailspin since Mirvish Books closed in 2009 and it’s time to take a step back and reevaluate.

My admiration for Holly is evident in my September 2009 post about her shop; whenever I’d meet a collector of glass or Canadian ceramics I’d mention Twice Found and the collector would invariably say they’d known Holly for years. It’s a small world, after all.

For the past several months I’ve been working with my friend Magda on redecorating the main floor of her house and we’d been planning a trip to Twice Found for a few finishing touches. Holly’s note kicked us into gear and Magda and I stopped in on Sunday. We were not disappointed. I scored three superb vases — two Swedish and one Czech — all 30 per cent off, and Magda took home a lovely art glass bowl, a hand-painted decorative plate and the amazing Adrian Pearsall “Jacks” coffee table, below, for the outrageously low price of $225. is presently showing a few of these tables priced anywhere from $1,850$5,500. Needless to say, Magda is thrilled!

Holly and Marie will be winding things down through the end of June but the stock is already dwindling so drop in sooner rather than later. Lighting and furniture — Holly still has a beautiful mid-century walnut dining table — is reduced by 50 per cent, tableware and pottery is marked down 25 – 50 per cent and Marie’s jewellery is separated into bargain bins of $2 (values up to $10), $5 (values up to $18) and $10 (values up to $25); all other jewellery 25% off. Asian pieces are discounted 50 per cent.

“Although we are closing this store,” says Holly, “we will always be buying and selling — we are just not sure yet where and how that will happen. If you would like to stay in touch you can subscribe to our blog on the website or respond to us individually and you will be added to our mailing lists: for jewellery, marie[at], and for Canadian pottery, furniture and mid-century modern in general, holly[at]”

I must say that I have had a wonderful time with Chris these past few months during the transformation of my living space. We started out as a designer and client and quickly progressed to great friends. Not only is he a creative designer but he is very talented and has an eye for good quality with great prices.I always look forward to times with Chris who is also blessed with a fantastic sense of humour.
When is our next field trip Chris?
