Waddington’s Reference Book Sale

StyleNorth reader Alison wrote to me yesterday to let me know about an upcoming decorative arts reference book sale through Waddington’s auctioneers. Some of you could probably care less but most home decor junkies are collectors of something, whether it’s Chinese export porcelain, or Steuben glass, or Canadian art, or Irish silver . . . you get the idea. The Waddington’s sale features reference book lots on these and myriad other specialty subjects, all estimated in the $50 – $100 range for anywhere from five to 15 volumes. The online sale starts March 21 and closes March 24 at  2 pm. Thanks for the head’s up Alison!

If you’re bidding, don’t use the estimates as a guide. Wadds has been doing online auctions for everything under the sun lately and the estimates are always low. I’m guessing they do this on purpose to lower the expectations of the consignor going in to the sale, and then when many things sell higher than the published estimate, they pretend they are heroes for making you so much money. There are a ton of great books here but there is also a lot of filler and a lot of dated stuff, i.e. the older auction catalogs, so pick and choose wisely.

    Hi Gus!
Yes, I completely agree with your posting. They do seem to have estimates for a lot of their stuff/online auctions all over the map for sure, usually way too low. However, I’m thinking that there may be some deals to be had (fingers crossed!), because some books are sooo heavy, anyone who isn’t local to pick up may not bother bidding and paying the ship costs at all :) Hopefully there will be some ‘sleeper’ lots to be had!
Just thought I’d pass on the info to Chris’ readers for the heck of it. I just love and respect old books, lol!
