A Ghost of Projects Past

Here’s a blast from the past. Eminentcritic’s comment about seeing a Falcon Chair at GUFF sent me to their site to find out what they were asking — same price but in leather with an ottoman so technically a better deal although it wouldn’t have gone nearly as well with my decor. But I digress; while on the GUFF site (one of my top five Toronto vintage shops, BTW!) I spotted this teak bar cart, which looks more than a little like the cart I rehabbed in this post from September 2009. To quickly recap, I found the cart at St. Lawrence Antiques Market for $15, then after a few years of use, left it for dead in a nasty cellar before reviving it with some careful sanding and polymerized tung oil. If I’d had a use for the cart it wouldn’t have been rotting in the basement so I flipped it on Craigslist for $60. What did GUFF get for its cart? $245! Two lessons learned, a) obviously I’m underpricing my finds on CL and b) a little elbow grease can really pay off, literally.

A note about GUFF, their merch is truly priced to sell and turns over practically daily. I’ve seen other MCM dealers on the street spit after saying the name GUFF because they can’t compete with the pricing and they’re green over how quickly things move in and out of the store. You won’t always find a gem at GUFF but your odds are better than even. See my earlier post about the shop here.

Good evening Chris, GUFF is really a great find, I go there as often as I can, and MANY dealers do not understand that moving merchandise quickly, adds up to customers coming back just the same. How many times have we gone to shops that have the same old, time after time…Lois of lovely teak cart btw

Maybe I spoke too soon; I was at GUFF yesterday where I discovered that prices have climbed and are now more or less in line with the rest of the strip. No screaming bargains on the floor at the moment.
