This post has absolutely nothing to do with real Canadians decorating; I’m sorry, I apologize right off the top. But any decor junkie, Canadian or otherwise, will appreciate the preview gallery of the upcoming Wright auction of Scandinavian design. All the iconic mid-century designers are present and accounted for — Aalto, Jacobsen, Wegner, Mathsson, Hennigsen, Juhl — but what stands out for me are the less familiar pieces.
Poul Henningsen is renowned for his lighting, and yes, there’s a PH 5/3 lamp (above centre) included here, but it’s the lesser-known Frits Henningsen who’s a revelation to me with pieces like the chairs above and sofa below; I love the references back to Empire and Biedermeier styles.
The Wright estimates are stratospheric — for instance the pair of chairs, above right, are expected to fetch $18,000 – $22,000 — which means that this preview is as close as I’m ever likely to get to them unless I see some in a museum one day. At any rate, the Wright preview gallery provides a superb and surprising education on Scandinavian design, I highly recommend it.

In need of a stylenorth fix, I visited and discovered the Scandinavian post again. I sighed. In my ennui, my hand listlessly dragged the mouse over the Wright link. OMG. I was suddenly in another world, a world where people will spend up to $7,000 on an ashtray. Was I dreaming? It felt so real.

Lois, I’m swamped in my day job blogging about culture for the City (http://livewithculture.ca); there’s nothing left of me for decor blogging right now, sorry!
I’m moving June 1st so there will be lots of decorating in my future but saddly I have no budget for shopping so there won’t be anything really new. Harumph.
I think what you’re witnessing is stylenorth on its last leg.
