Brave New Kitchen

We don’t officially move until January 23 but Mike and I got a head-start yesterday and installed a couple of recent purchases at the new apartment. We’ve had the amazing chrome table base for a few years but just last week we scored the spectacular marble top on Craigslist for $200. The vivid flatweave rugs were originally joined along the long side to make more of a square (St. Lawrence Market, $100) but we’ve elected to break them up and use them as runners in the galley kitchen.

If we stick with the scheme we’ll likely make a blue and white roman blind to dress up the window, which looks across our insanely large balcony into the Rosedale ravine.

It’s weird to have the kitchen set up while the adjoining rooms are a riot of boxes — the kitchen will be our oasis of promise amid the chaos of the move, inspiring us to make the rest of the place just as exciting. Here’s hoping.

Happy New Year Chris, and congrats on move/new pad! Doesn’t it feel great to do something new and big like a mover first thing in Jan? (I just finished a full-on apt re-org and it felt soooo right). I like the marble but I’m in love with those carpets – what a great pop of colour. … You’ve reminded me to check out St Lawrence more often! All the best in your new digs.

I’m with Grungequeen: the carpets! Reminds me of this post from last year (obviously made an impact on me):

Shortly after you posted about blue, I began to see how designers use it. I know a designer whose house is all black and white (magazine gorgeous) with a few shots of blue that are electrifying.

Can’t wait to see how your new home evolves. Happy New Year!

    Grungequeen, Neville,
I’m really glad you’re responding to the rugs because we’re absolutely loving them. I admit this is one instance where I was swayed by a trend; shortly before we found the rugs, Pantone named turquoise THE colour of 2010 and while the rugs aren’t strictly turquoise, there is a lot of gradation in the weave. By the time we’ve styled the space with window coverings and a blue vase of peonies, this kitchen is going to rock!

While my search continues to find the perfect bungalow for a downsize & move on my end – how great that in the meantime I get to live vicariously through your move! How excited you must be to start anew! Thanks for sharing with us. :)
