I’m laid-up in bed this week with a merciless cold so all I have for you today is a little tidbit that came in over the transom from Tandy Leather Factory in Mississauga. Mike and I have purchased a number of hides from Tandy and I can vouch for their quality and service. If you buy a $35 membership you receive a big discount on everything in the store: Tandy’s hair-on hides (32 – 40 square feet) are priced at $240 until October 31, but if you buy a membership you can take one home for just $215 ($180 + membership fee). Elsewhere, hides typically retail for $600 or more.
The picture above is one I snapped last year at Toronto’s Angus & Company, the image below is from the Tandy warehouse.

Help! Is it appropriate to do anything with cow hides other than put them on the floor? I have a firm no-stuff-on-the-floor policy because of cat hair and dust.

Olya, these hides are a snap to take care of, sweep them, vacuum them, you could even Swiffer them provided you follow the direction of the hair. I don’t know if your cat would claw at it . . . don’t they prefer nubby fabrics with a bit of give to them?
Thanks for the good wishes everyone!
