Shops: BunkHouse Kids

1911 Avenue Road, Toronto

Some retailers just “get it.” You can tell the minute you step into their shops. Their branding and signage are together, their windows and floor displays are well executed and the mix of products is bang on the money. That’s the feeling I had on a weekend stop at Toronto’s bunkHouse Kids.

Great-looking displays are lined up like dominoes, one after another, across both floors of the large showroom. The beds are dressed in a range of smart prints like the fun rocket ship pattern, above, all of them available for sale. And just look at the clever storage built into the bed, above.

The hockey-crazed boy’s room vignette, above, is remarkable for the level of effort store owner Kevin Kelly puts into his showroom. And I’m sure it pays off. After seeing this, what 10-year-old blueliner or forward wouldn’t demand his very own shrine to the Maple Leafs. Pity the parents.

I’ve heard that finding great bunk beds is a lot tougher than it used to be. Salesman Art Offenheim (what a mensch!) told me the bunkHouse is attracting customers from as far away as Burlington and Hamilton because there are so few other options in this particular niche market.

Taking home a room from bunkHouse will take a significant bite out of your pay packet. This stuff’s not cheap! But the quality is good, with Canadian-made, solid wood construction, deep drawers and convenient trundles for those de rigueur sleepovers.

And bunkHouse Kids doesn’t just sell bunk beds; twin beds, dressers and desks are all featured, in addition to a wide range of bedding (below). If you’re decorating a child’s or ‘tween’s bedroom, this place should definitely be on your radar.

Thank you for this, we are in Cambridge and can’t find the bunk bed we want for our daughters room. Hopefully a trip to Bunkhouse will help us in our hunt!

Terrible customer service! I called the store and asked for the price of a bed I saw online. The man who answered the phone told me that they prefer customers to come to the store rather than give prices out. I told him I wanted to know if it was worth me going all that way to the store and whether the bed was in our price range. He asked me if I have been looking around for beds already. I then asked if he was going to give me the price. He abruptly hung up on me and a recorded voice said, “Goodbye.” I am so disappointed by their disgusting disgusting customer service. I cannot believe how rude he was to a potential buyer.
