Interior designers were out en masse yesterday for the start of IIDEX/NeoCon Canada, the country's largest trade-only expo of residential and commercial products and materials. This year's show is IIDEX's 25th installment but instead of looking back, the marketing focus is on "the next 25" with a strong emphasis on sustainability and "green" building technologies.

Tripod lamps are hot, hot, hot. I'm seeing them in advertisements, shelter mags and certainly in the stores I visit. StyleNorth also gets a constant trickle of search hits from people on the hunt for this must-have accessory so I thought it was time I did a little survey of where to find this bold, contemporary accent.

Sincere thanks to all of you who filled out my readership survey; it has given me a much better picture of who I'm writing for. So far the survey has been answered by 220 individuals and it's not too late to add your details. So who is the styleNorth reader? She's a college-educated, Canadian woman in her 30s or 40s; she owns her home and earns in excess of $60,000 per annum. What a feeling of sadness came over me yesterday as I toured the nearly-empty Ritchies showroom in advance of tonight's back-from-the-brink auction. After a two-month closure and the dismissal of its entire staff, Ritchies owner and CEO Ira Hopmeyer is endeavouring to resuscitate the business with a two-day sale, tonight and tomorrow. There's precious little to be had.

What I know about woodworking is enough to fill a single blog post, this one. I'm as rank an amateur and you'll find. But that didn't stop me from trying to rehabilitate this teak bar cart which looks incredible now, thanks to a really good sanding and a rub-down with my new favorite product, polymerized tung oil.
