Colour Story: Metallic Black

When I was scouting along Yonge Street’s Rosedale decor strip last week I kept seeing black lamps and accessories with a metallic iridescence, almost like a matte finish that had been stubbornly polished until it shone, like the dull gleam of aged bronze.

The lamps, above, are on display in the window of Decorum Decorative Finds (1210 Yonge Street); the $995 price tag (for the pair) might suck the breath out of you but if you’re up for a splurge, you’ll be on the cutting edge of home fashion.

I missed the Canadian Gift and Tableware Association show last month but Arminé Tatosian, co-owner of AT Design Group (5 MacPherson Avenue), told me that shine was a recurring theme across all the exhibit halls. AT is a big fan of New York designer Michael Aram and that’s one of his burnished copper bowls, above, clad with real gold inside. Available in a range of sizes (4.5″ for $84.50 to 14″ for $665), Tatosian says the smaller piece with its golden glow makes a stunning votive holder.

L’Atelier (1224 Yonge Street) is stocking lots of metallic black shine: the bronze orb lamp, above left, is $669, the glazed black planter, centre, is $169 and the decorative vessels, above right, only look metallic, they’re actually carved ebony from Mozambique ($49 – $115).

At Living Metropolis Flowers (1206 Yonge Street) the shiny black pots below are priced at $20, $30 and $40 depending on size.

There’s no question that metallic black is a full-on trend and my guess is this trend has legs.
