Recently, Mike and I headed out to tiny St. Jacobs, a little over an hour west of Toronto, for a first-class mooch through Artefacts Salvage & Design (46 Isabella Street, 519.664.3760) and the Spring Street Antiques Market (8 Spring Street, 519.664.1234). My photos from Artefacts succumbed to the same mechanical failure that’s been plaguing me lately but at least the Spring Street shots survived.
Not far from Kitchener-Waterloo, St. Jacobs is in the heart of Mennonite country so I was expecting lots of solid, unadorned wooden furniture. Imagine my surprise then, at finding several good mid-century pieces and lots of lovely Asian and chinoiserie accents. The vintage Solair Sunflower chair in mint condition is $150, the 1960s floor lamp with brass pole and black acrylic “leaves” is $295 and the awesome metal saucer chair is one of a pair that comes with a matching bistro table for just $175 (the whole set is pictured after the jump).
The Danish, three-legged side table, above left, is $245, the carved Chinese red stool/side table is $58 and the pagoda-top, mahogany mirror is $175.
The Victorian, bamboo whatnot stand (circa 1890) is priced at $225, a pair of comical, red foo dogs is $295 and the Japanese lacquered vase with gold details is $65. The Spring Street market is staffed with cashiers who have no power to haggle so prices are firm.
Here’s a shot of the complete black “saucer” bistro set with its amazing retro lines, what fun!
