At the corner of Centre Street and 7th Avenue SW sits one of the hidden gems of Calgary’s art and design community. Since opening its doors in late 2004, Art Central has become a hub for Calgary’s artists and designers, not to mention a trusted source for original Canadian art and design.

I stopped by on Saturday to visit with Ljubica Todorovic, artist and owner of Studio Todorovic and find out a bit more about Art Central. Luba describes Art Central as a mall full of art. Precisely! Art Central spans three floors of an historical building, filled with shops, galleries, studios and cafes. It’s the first of its kind in Calgary, and is recognized as being the city’s best source for art.

Every shop, studio and gallery is locally owned, usually by the artists and designers. For the owners, it’s not merely a business venue, it’s a community. For the shopper, it’s a must-visit destination for gorgeous, original art, clothing made by Canadian designers, fresh flowers, stunning jewelery, fabulous books and stationary, and even art and design classes!

If you’ve never been to Art Central, a great time to visit is the first Thursday of every month when “the mall” comes alive from 5 – 9 pm to showcase new arrivals along with live music and some delicious eats!
