Cheap Thrills: Rose-Hill Liquidation Outlet

Just say the words “liquidation outlet” and Mike and I are halfway out the door, even if the outlet happens to be in Waterdown, Ontario, 45 minutes west of Toronto (just north of Burlington). I take my mission to connect readers with decorating resources very seriously, especially if saving money is on the agenda.

So off we went Sunday morning in search of Rose-Hill Liquidation Outlet, a retailer promising fantastic prices on furniture and appliances. Turns out Rose-Hill is stronger on the latter than the former, although I did see a few pieces I’d consider taking home. The handsome, glen plaid easy chair left was priced at just $247 and the leaf-motif ottoman beside it was $150.

The headboards, above, hit a variety of price points; my favourite–the dusty, sloping wood one—had a nice marquettry detail and was priced at $250. The dining set with eight plether parson’s chairs was $850. Otherwise, the quality was spotty with melamine, fiberboard and lots of cheap veneers. Appliances, on the other hand, looked promising.

The 60” Samsung flat-screen TV (DVD player and stand included) was priced at $600 (sold!) and the General Electric wine fridge (two in stock, 30-day warranty) was reduced to $225. Small appliances—coffee makers, toasters, etc—were going for $5 and $10 each. Great deals on fridges, stoves, vaccums and mattress sets were also in the offing. If you’re looking for style, give Rose-Hill a pass, but if you’re setting up house and looking for some basics, it’s worth the drive to Waterdown.

NOTE: If you sign up for the company’s weekly electronic newsletter you can save an extra 13 per cent (equivalent to the tax in Ontario) on your purchase.
