Where to Find: John Robshaw Bedding

I’ve seen a few blog posts recently about John Robshaw’s fabulous line of Indian fabrics and bedding. Naturally, I wanted to find out where his products are available in Canada: the designer’s website lists just two locations, both in Toronto—Kol Kid (670 Queen Street West, 416.681.0368) for child’s bedding, and Lucca (2031 Yonge Street, 416.485.4999) for bed sets, shams and bolsters. We also found a third T.O. retailer who just happens to be having a sale . . .

I knew from perusing Robshaw’s website that his stuff wasn’t cheap but tack on shipping and currency exchange and aye carumba, we’re talking pricey. At Kol Kid, a baby set (above) featuring bumper, crib fitted sheet, quilt and crib skirt is $449.95. Ouch!

At Lucca, a Queen size duvet cover is $580, flat and fitted sheets are $245 each, a Euro sham is $98 and a bolster cover (20″ x 40″) is $228.

Turns out, Toronto’s Angus & Company (647 Dupont Street, 416.537.4104) also carries Robshaw’s pillow shams, which just happen to be on sale right now for 40 per cent off on 20” x 20” and 26” x 26” shams regularly priced at $120 – $140 each. This is a fantastic deal for these red hot accent items.

If that’s still too rich for your blood, Mike and I happened to see some similarly inspired fabric on the roll at macFab, above, (600 Queen Street West, 416.922.6000) priced at just $29.99 per yard. This is a good-quality cotton linen similar to Robshaw’s (although not hand-blocked) but at a fraction of the price. Five yards and the cost of a seamstress would give you a Queen size duvet cover for about $200.

If a passage to India doesn’t fit into your budget this season, maybe a hit of exotica will do the trick.
