Sam Mozun aka Sam the Chandelier Man has been a fixture—sorry, I couldn’t resist—on Toronto’s Queen West/Roncesvalles antique row for 30 years. And although his stock includes more than just chandeliers, that’s certainly the focus in his over-stuffed shops, which sprawl across three storefronts. Don’t let the down-at-heel signage and ambience put you off; Sam’s got some first rate pieces at fair, if not ultra-low prices and he’s usually willing to negotiate.
And lest you think frilly French and Italian crystal pieces are all the shop has to offer, check out the amazing 1960s wagon-wheel above, in solid brass ($950). The 12-arm fixture is about four-feet across and Sam says he’s got another one just like it tucked away. I absolutely love it, what a statement!
There’s not much Sam doesn’t know about chandeliers and glass shades and he’s a great source of advice and spare parts should you be looking for the missing piece of a chandelier puzzle. Finding him on the premises, however, can be tricky due to his somewhat irregular schedule. He assures me that he tries to be in the shop Saturdays and Sundays and weekdays from 12 – 2 pm. Definitely call ahead if you’re going out of your way to make the trip.
Once you are inside, be prepared to go slowly. The ceiling is absolutely jammed with hanging fixtures of every descriptions and the only way to discern one piece from another is to take your time and be methodical. Happy hunting.
