Art School Gingerbread

There was plenty of finger licking going on at the Ontario College of Art & Design yesterday as students blew off some end-of-term stress at the Second Annual Gingerbread House Competition. Organized by Campus Life coordinator Brent Everett James at the behest of chief instigator Amelia Levick, the free event attracted about 20 teams. Yours truly was asked to stand in as a guest judge.

It was obvious by some of the slapdash efforts that more than a few students were just having a lark. “It’s really about the free candy and the holiday fun,” said Andrew Bailey, above, as he helped teammates Michelle Doran (left) and Lauren McArthur (right) pull together their winning effort.

Prizes were awarded in four categories: Best in Show, Most Creative, Most Traditional and Most Shocking (which truly was!). Amelia and I had no trouble agreeing on the winners. Best in Show was awarded to Nick and Natalie (above) and their teammates for Interpretive Gaudi: Sagrada Familia or Church of the Holy Gremlin Jesus.

I was also genuinely delighted by the effort below from a team of young industrial designers who riffed on a glass house using walls of plexi that let us see into their fully furnished gingerbread living room. Check out the gumdrop cushions on the sofa and the Christmas tree in the corner, even a potted plant. Terrific work.

In the pic below left, Michelle puts finishing touches on the Church of Zardoz, prior to claiming the Most Traditional Prize with her teammates. Thanks everybody, for a fun afternoon.
