The before and after, above, is just about the easiest fix going. I saw the “Indian Brass Table” on Craigslist ($100) where it languished for three weeks with no takers. No doubt the stylized brass top was scaring prospective buyers away. But I loved the retro, modern base, which would add some umph to just about any room.
What’s more, I knew I’d seen tables like it on 1stdibs.com (below) for 10, 20, even 30 times the price. And isn’t that a Spider Table featured in the brand new issue of Elle Décor (December 2008)? Yup, this table is hot!
And since I just happened to have a spare glass top tucked away, I grabbed the Craigslist one for a friend whose new apartment I’m helping to decorate. Now she’s got an amazing coffee table that perfectly suits her taste and will provide a big style cue as we continue to pull the rest of the room together.
The moral of the story is that when you scroll Craigslist, keep an open mind and think outside the box. If a piece has great lines but ugly wood, imagine it painted; if the condition is poor but the potential is great, roll up your sleeves and take on the project—you’ll be rewarded in the end.

You’ve got a great eye Chris – I’m a Craigs list addict and never spotted that! The refurbished table looks gorgeous on the rug you’ve shown it with.
