Mike and I were bowled over by this gilt wall sconce at Toronto’s Door Store and even more dazzled by the $450 price tag, which seemed remarkably low for so much WOW; the piece is huge–53″ wide and 32″ tall–and sports eight lights. And yet it languishes still, several months after going on display because no one has yet had the courage to go this far over the top.
Then on 1stdibs.com this week came an ad for the sconce below, which isn’t as large (39″ x 30″) and has only four light fittings. The price? $1,950 USD plus shipping from New York’s AREAiD Inc.
The Door Store sconce is yet another example of how lucky we are here in Toronto to have access to such high quality goods at relatively reasonable prices. The Door Store is a treasure trove and one of my favorite local sources for the quirky and the fabulous. The retailer’s website also features an Expert Advice page with answers to questions like “What size light fixture is right for my dining room or hallway?”. Whether you’re in Toronto or not, this is a good page to add to your bookmarks folder.
