If you’re ever in the upper Annex, along Dupont Street, you’ve probably admired the fantastic window displays of Relative Space/Floorworks (365 Dupont, east of Bathurst). With great contemporary furnishings ranging from Piero Lissoni beds to Jab rugs, Relative Space has renovated their showroom and expanded into the building next door to house their new high-tech kitchen line from Schiffini of Italy. Floorworks is the contract end of the operation.
The store was closed when I took this photo but, when I called, I found out that the white sofa on display is from an Italian company, Living Divani, which places an emphasis on “understated and minimalist shapes”. I’m not sure I would describe the sofa (above) as understated, but I love the way its organic form, upholstered in white, really pops against the bright colours and sharp lines on the wall.
The installation, titled Birds of Paradise, is by OCAD students Alexa Ponomareff and Daniela Pettinato. Fraser Greenberg, Artistic Director of Relative Space, invited students enrolled in the fourth year course, Painting in the Expanded Field, to submit proposals for a site-specific wall work to be presented in the window. Birds of Paradise was one of two submissions selected, but sadly, the piece is slated to come down today, to be replaced, no doubt, by something equally arresting.
