Devotees of the late, great Robertson Davies won’t want to miss the Ritchies Select Sale September 16 -18, when furnishings and decorative items belonging to the revered author and playwright are auctioned in Toronto.
Davies, who died in 1995, clearly loved his wingback chairs because a trio of them will be on the block next month including the one (centre) in which the author was photographed (above) by Harry Palmer.
Also included in the sale are early portraits of Davies (above) and his wife Brenda in pencil and mixed media by Grant Kenneth MacDonald (d. 1987).
The highest estimate for a Davies’ Estate item is attached to a pair of polychromed carvings (below left)–figures of King Menelaus of Sparta and Paris of Troy–which are expected to fetch $2,000 – $3,000. But I’m pretty sure the greatest interest will be in the Chippendale mahogany writing desk where at least some of the master’s prose was born. Estimate for the early 20th century piece is $1,500-$2,000 but my guess is it will go higher, possibly much higher.
