Revisiting my old stomping grounds in Montreal’s Mile End neighbourhood, I was pleased to stumble across Galerie-CO. A cross between a gallery and a retail store, CO offers beautifully designed objects from around the world, which benefit the environment, the people who make them, and those of us who enjoy them. This boutique showcases a fresh and imaginative line of products, most of which are new to Montreal, and in some cases, to North America. Conceived by owner Sarah Richardson, CO responds to the need for ecologically sensitive consumer products without compromising on craftsmanship.
A few items really stood out on my visit, namely Inke Heliand’s ménagerie made from vintage wallpapers (above left), A4 Design’s honeycomb cardboard shelving (above right), Yaron Elyasi’s plastic stools (below left), and Heath Nash’s beautiful lighting made from recycled plastic bottles (below right).
Galérie-CO opened its doors on May 10, 2008, World Fair Trade Day. The shop promotes art and design as accessible elements of a healthy lifestyle. Richardson believes that beautiful objects can be both functional and affordable, while contributing to a sustainable future. Not only a feast for the eyes, Galérie-CO offers food for thought. This one-stop shop is definitely worth a visit.
